Kate & Dan. A Retro Engagement Session.

When scouting for interesting locations for engagement sessions, an important factor for me is to find somewhere very secluded, where the couple can feel at ease and not have to worry about on-lookers… Kate and Dan’s engagement session was about as far removed from this ideal as you could get.

In early June, Coolangatta comes alive with style, cars and music from the 50’s and 60’s. Kate and Dan chose to get into the vibe and have their shoot in amongst the spectacular that is ‘Cooly Rocks On’. So 50’s styled Kate, Dapper-Dan and I took to the streets, with thousands of other people and made this series of images.

As chaotic as it was at times, the general vibe was electric and we definitely all had a ball! The old classic cars were the perfect props for the shoot and I’d like to thank the owners who graciously let us use their vehicles. After such a fun day, I really can’t wait for Kate and Dan’s wedding next year… it’s going to be a blast!

Briony & Diamond. A Lennox Head Engagement Session.

At the start of this year, following the results of Australia’s Marriage Law Postal Survey, fellow photographer Melle Veronesi offered up her wedding photography services to one lucky same-sex couple at no charge. This very quickly snowballed into an entire wedding with more than 20 local wedding suppliers and soon the Same-Sex Wedding Competition valued at over $15,000 was born.

As Melle was obviously covering the wedding photography part of the competition, I offered up my services for the lucky couple’s engagement session.

Briony and Diamond were the lucky winners and I couldn’t imagine a more deserving couple. These guys were so appreciative and oh so much in love! I was so happy to have been able to be a part of their journey.

For their engagement session, we spent a gorgeous afternoon strolling along the beach at Lennox Head. Below are the results of our time together.

Sonya & Jamie. A Byron Bay Engagement Session.

Is there anything better than a sunset photo session on the beach when the sky is filled with moody post-storm clouds? Well, I guess there probably is, but right now, nothing comes to mind. Sonya & Jamie travelled to Byron Bay from Sydney for their hinterland wedding and a few days before the wedding, we took to the beach to capture these images. Each of my album packages includes an ‘engagement session’, which is essentially just a trial run of what we’ll be doing together on the wedding day. It’s a great chance for us all to get to know one another better and for me to understand what is and isn’t important to the couple (Oh… and it’s also a great opportunity to show the groom that having professional photos taken isn’t really scary at all). Rebecca & Jamie. A Boulder Beach Engagement Session.

Last week, Rebecca, Jamie and I had organised to meet at Ballina’s Shelly Beach for their engagement shoot. When we arrived however, the beach was totally wild. The surf was thrashing around and dumping huge amounts of foam onto the beach. The sky was thick with salt and sand, and all-in-all it just didn’t seem like what any of us had in mind.

We decided instead to take a short drive to Boulder Beach and the comparison was incredible. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions at this well protected little cove. The new location also brought back some old memories. Four years ago I shot Rebecca’s good friend Kaila’s wedding nearby and we came to this very same location for the couple’s creative shoot.

These guys were such fun to shoot and I can’t wait for the big day in September!

Krystal & Clayton. A Bangalow Engagement Session.

Krystal & Clayton took a leisurely drive down to Bangalow last weekend for their engagement session. They travelled down from Minden where they will host their country wedding in April, and as such, they wanted to have a bit of a country feel to their images. Several times a week for the past five years I have driven past a local property with a great old wooden gate that I have always wanted to shoot at. For this session, I finally took the time to go and chat with the owner and get his tick of approval. This really is a photographer’s paradise around Bangalow. We can be shooting in a very country setting like this one moment and be kicking up the sand on some of the country’s best beaches just ten minutes later. As the crow flies, this particular old gate is probably less than 300m from my house… it doesn’t get much more local than that.
