Byron Bay holds a very special place in the hearts of Yasemin and Johan Mårtensson. Although they are both from Sweden, it was Byron Bay where they first met fourteen years ago. The couple have been holidaying here for the past couple of months with their children and wanted to preserve the memories with a photo session on the beach. Below are just a few of the images from their session.
Lately I have been wearing shorts to beach sessions as I usually end up getting in the water up to my knees to grab particular shots. On this occasion however, I had just come from a commercial shoot and was decked out in full business attire. Initially I rolled up my pants as I paddled around but as soon as the first wave hit me, I just gave up and went all the way in up to my shoulders. I think it was well worth the effort though. The water was beautiful and I think we grabbed a few great shots as a result!

Last Sunday was the perfect day for a portrait session on the beach at Cabarita… pleasant temperatures, no wind, insane pastel skies, in fact the only part of the afternoon that wasn’t ideal was the drive to Cabarita. The Byron Bay Bluesfest traffic had many of us driving for an hour or so more than we’d have liked, but the journey was certainly worth it. The Fleming family were a lot of fun to spend the afternoon with and I think we all had a ball.

This post has been a long time in the making. Not only was there more than four and a half years between these two shoots, it has also taken me around eighteen months to edit the images from the second session.
The first image below is of our eldest daughter, Asia, and was taken in June 2007 when she was 237 days old. This has long been one of my favourite images of Asia, and so when our second daughter Harper came along, I thought it would be fun to do a shoot at the same age. So in March 2012, on the day when Harper was exactly 237 days old, I created the second image. This one was taken on the train tracks down the road from where we live in Bangalow. I didn’t want to create an exact replica of Asia’s image, but did want to have a very similar composition. The train tracks worked well and gave me the result I expected… what I didn’t expect was that Harper would recreate Asia’s initial pose.
It’s incredible to see both children at the exact same age and see just how similar they are. I think this was the perfect age for this, as they have both developed and don’t look nearly as similar now. Even so, I think I may try to do a similar shoot every few years, so we have a real comparison of the girls as they grow.
I hope you like the post… sometime a doting dad just has to share : )

It seems like only yesterday that I was photographing the Carter family. I covered Stacey Carter’s wedding late last year and for Mother’s Day this year, she gave her mum Joy a gift voucher for this photo session. It was wonderful to see everyone again and while we had to duck for cover a few times during sudden bursts of rain, all in all I think everyone had a great afternoon.
