Rebecca & Jamie. A Boulder Beach Engagement Session.

Rebecca & Jamie. A Boulder Beach Engagement Session.

ENG-Bec-Jaime-001

Last week, Rebecca, Jamie and I had organised to meet at Ballina’s Shelly Beach for their engagement shoot. When we arrived however, the beach was totally wild. The surf was thrashing around and dumping huge amounts of foam onto the beach. The sky was thick with salt and sand, and all-in-all it just didn’t seem like what any of us had in mind.

We decided instead to take a short drive to Boulder Beach and the comparison was incredible. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions at this well protected little cove. The new location also brought back some old memories. Four years ago I shot Rebecca’s good friend Kaila’s wedding nearby and we came to this very same location for the couple’s creative shoot.

These guys were such fun to shoot and I can’t wait for the big day in September!

Portrait of a Craftsman. Noai Yoshinabu.

yoshi noai

Welcome to the first in a series of ‘Portrait of a Craftsman’. It is my aim to feature many craftspeople specialising in a wide range of crafts. Many of the crafts I focus on will be those that have existed for hundreds of years, but now, with the mass-produced requirements of a disposable society, are slowly disappearing.

Meet Yoshi, an incredibly talented master of fine Japanese joinery and sculpture. I was first introduced to Yoshi in the mid-eighties by my High School woodwork teacher Leigh Kelly. At the time I was involved in the Northern Rivers woodcraft group and we would occasionally take day-trips out to Yoshi’s to witness him in action. I still have vivid memories of these days and so it seemed fitting that Yoshi be the first in this series. It is almost 30 years since I last saw Yoshi, but very little seems to have changed over that time. He is still crafting beautiful furniture and art pieces using age-old traditional techniques and a wide collection of hand-tools. He still works from the same workshop on his beautiful Burringbar property and he is still mesmerising to watch.

Below is a small collection of images from my afternoon with Yoshi. Keep an eye on the blog for the next in this series.

The Fleming Family. Cabarita Beach Photography.

cabarita beach family photography

Last Sunday was the perfect day for a portrait session on the beach at Cabarita… pleasant temperatures, no wind, insane pastel skies, in fact the only part of the afternoon that wasn’t ideal was the drive to Cabarita. The Byron Bay Bluesfest traffic had many of us driving for an hour or so more than we’d have liked, but the journey was certainly worth it. The Fleming family were a lot of fun to spend the afternoon with and I think we all had a ball.

237 Days

AsiaHarperSmall2

This post has been a long time in the making. Not only was there more than four and a half years between these two shoots, it has also taken me around eighteen months to edit the images from the second session.

The first image below is of our eldest daughter, Asia, and was taken in June 2007 when she was 237 days old. This has long been one of my favourite images of Asia, and so when our second daughter Harper came along, I thought it would be fun to do a shoot at the same age. So in March 2012, on the day when Harper was exactly 237 days old, I created the second image. This one was taken on the train tracks down the road from where we live in Bangalow. I didn’t want to create an exact replica of Asia’s image, but did want to have a very similar composition. The train tracks worked well and gave me the result I expected… what I didn’t expect was that Harper would recreate Asia’s initial pose.

It’s incredible to see both children at the exact same age and see just how similar they are. I think this was the perfect age for this, as they have both developed and don’t look nearly as similar now. Even so, I think I may try to do a similar shoot every few years, so we have a real comparison of the girls as they grow.

I hope you like the post… sometime a doting dad just has to share : )

Melissa & Sidney. Byron Bay Engagement Photography Session

banaglow wedding photographer

I don’t believe I ever question why I live in this part of the country, but if ever I did, afternoons like last Sunday would surely be reason enough. It was a spectacular afternoon in Byron Bay and the perfect setting for an engagement session. Melissa and Sidney are an awesome young couple and really great sports. We spent much of the afternoon just admiring the weather and the sunset, but at other times, they were climbing over sharp rocks, strolling down dirt tracks, along-side no-so-pleasant-smelling swamp lands and standing in ankle-high sea water (which turned into waist-high sea water as soon as they hit their marks)… anything to get the shot!

The Bangalow Guesthouse will play host to their November wedding and I really can’t wait to spend another day shooting with these guys…  they truly are a wonderful couple.
