Kimberley & Shane. An Elements of Byron Wedding.

Kimberley & Shane. An Elements of Byron Wedding.

Last weekend was truly an emotional weekend for weddings in the Northern Rivers region. The area was hit with the worst flooding in almost 50 years and many couple’s weddings were affected. Roads were cut in all directions which meant wedding guests and suppliers simply weren’t able to reach their destination.

For Kimberley and Shane, several of their guests were trapped north of Byron Bay and the disappointment was obvious. Tears were flowing, stress levels were high, but then at the last minute, while Shane was patiently waiting for his bride-to-be, a group of guests came sprinting across the fields and made it to the ceremony literally seconds before Kim arrived.

Luck it seemed was definitely on Kim and Shane’s side. The clouds parted and the couple were married under the first patch of blue sky I had seen for what seemed like weeks.

This set the tone for the rest of the day. Kim and Shane exchanged vows, with their gorgeous daughter Luella in their arms, at Elements of Byron’s beautiful Heart of the Bay in front of their closest family and friends, to the acoustic tunes of Luke & Sebastian.

The reception was held back at the resort, where everyone enjoyed themselves long into the evening.

Justin Ealand. Byron Bay Portrait Photography.

This is Justin… fellow photographer, creative, father, husband, deep thinker and mountain lover. Earlier this week, Justin visited my humble little studio in Bangalow to have his portrait taken. It’s quite an experience taking another photographer’s portrait… especially one that I respect and admire as much as I do Justin.

I have had the privilege of photographing many other photographer’s weddings, but this was the first time having one in a more intimate studio setting. It was also the very first time Justin had had his portrait taken in a studio environment, so I think neither of us were 100% sure of what to expect. But as we started, the shoot felt like a very comfortable and natural experience and it became somewhat a collaborative effort. Justin was happy for me to experiment with lighting setups that I hadn’t tried before and just juggle and fine tune things throughout the session. The final result was a rather dodgy-looking, but very effective lighting schematic that was used for the image above and the ones at the end of this post.

Thanks for the experience Justin.

This was the second day in a row that I’ve had Rhydian Lewis in the studio. This time, he needed some urgent images for a new show he is putting together with Greg Aspeling & Sebastiaan Scholtens. The guys required individual shots as well as a group shot. To work in with everyone’s schedules, we had a very limited timeframe to work within. Each of the guys spent around 5 minutes individually in front of the camera and about another 5 minutes for the group shot. The images were edited and turned around just a few hours after the studio session….  what a day!

Rhydian Lewis is a local actor, model, crooner, entertainer and all round nice guy. I have had the pleasure of working with Rhydian on numerous occasions (including shooting his wedding), and he is always an absolute joy to work with…  a true professional! Recently he was in the market for some new actor’s headshots for his portfolio, so he popped over to the studio and we captured these images on the street in front of my studio.

Renee & Liam. A Fig Tree Restaurant Wedding.

Renee & Liam. A Fig Tree Restaurant Wedding.

Renee & Liam’s gorgeous Byron Bay wedding featured some of the best the region has to offer. Liam and his family prepared themselves at a stunning property overlooking The Pass, while Renee’s preparations took place at Byron’s iconic Rae’s at Wategos. Uber talented David Dibley and Mia Conner looked after Renee’s hair and makeup before everyone made their way to the ever-popular Fig Tree Restaurant.

I’ve shot a lot of weddings at Fig Tree and I never tire of it. In fact, it seems to just keep getting better and better each time I’m there. One of the venue’s greatest assets is its staff. They work together like a well-oiled machine and no request ever seems to be a problem. It truly is a joy to work amongst such professionals. For Renee and Liam’s wedding, the venue was styled by The Wedding Shed and Byron Bay Weddings and featured beautiful floral creations from the Alstonville Florist.

The couple’s ceremony was officiated by the lovely Clarah Luxford. With crystal clear views of the Byron coastline as a backdrop to the ceremony, it’s hard to imagine a better place to start a life together… and I’m sure theirs is going to be a wonderful one. Congrats guys!
