The lead up to anyone’s wedding can be stressful, but for Stacey and Mark, it seemed like they had more than their fair share of hurdles. In the past week they had a number of hiccups with suppliers, including a car smashing through the front of their florist’s shop. Thankfully all their flower’s were safe, but with the run of luck they were having, of course it was going to rain on their big day.
In the morning there was a little light drizzle about, but just as the bride’s limo pulled into the church driveway, the heavens opened and down it came. Despite all of this, I never once saw anything less than a smile on the faces of Stacey and Mark, even during the location shoots when we all got a little wetter than we would have liked (take a look at Mark’s jacket in some of the images below). Their happiness however was contagious and the entire bridal party and myself all had a great afternoon. Thanks guys for making the wettest wedding I’ve attended for a while so much fun!

To say that life of late has been busy would be an understatement. We are currently in the thick of wedding season (which is awesome), we are still working on finishing our house and next week I’m conducting workshops at the Australian Sign & Graphics Association’s National Conference, and seminars at Visual Impact Image Expo in Darling Harbour. All this combined with the usual scouting locations for future shoots, meeting with wonderful new clients and general day-to-day chores, leaves very little time to just kick back and enjoy a moment with the kids… which is kind of why Michelle and I packed up our lives in the city and moved to Bangalow in the first place.
On Sunday I decided to postpone tiling our laundry and actually enjoy the day with the kids. About ten metres from our front door there is a beautiful old tree that is known to the locals as the “Teddy Bear Tree”. When we first moved to the area there were dozens of Teddy Bear’s perched high in the tree or swinging from its branches. Sadly many of these Teddys have fallen victim to decay and there is maybe only fifteen or twenty left, but the tree still remains the gathering place for kids and many young families. The Teddy Bear Tree has two rope swings and our kids, much like most of the kids in the neighborhood, simply love them. Our youngest, Harper, points to the tree and cries out ‘Way’ whenever she wants a swing. ‘Way’ is what she calls it as this is the sounds she makes while swinging ‘Waaay-waaay’.
The first four images in this post are the photos I took of Asia on Sunday. I think her facial expressions highlight just how much fun we were having… a whole lot more fun than tiling. It was so enjoyable in fact, that yesterday I took another hour or so out of my day and just played with Harper around the tree. Time-out with the kids truly is the best medicine for almost any ailment, and rather addictive as well. I think when Harper wakes from her nap today we might find another tree to go and sit under for a while.

Every now and then, Rich and I manage to wrangle a few short hours out of our seriously crazy schedule to do a bit of a drive around the country lanes that crisscross all over Northern NSW. If you are ever searching for a seriously quaint, country Church to exchange your vows in, then this area has it all. I don’t know, perhaps it is just me, but I love a country wedding. I think I’m still in that honeymoon phase of moving to the country because I’m just loving the rolling hills, the country folk and the quaint timber Churches.
A little while back, Rich and I stumbled on The Eureka Uniting Church. Set back on a quiet country road, moments away from some of the most breath-taking scenery around… was it any wonder that we were truly excited to be invited to photograph Vicky and Chris’ wedding there? And, they didn’t disappoint. Vicky and Chris’ wedding just oozed Eureka country charm.
Vows were exchanged before an intimate gathering of friends and family, followed by afternoon tea in the Church hall and completed by a charming wedding reception at the historic Eltham Hotel. We know that some of the guests traveled a very long way to attend the wedding and I’m sure it was well worth the trip. When I asked Richard to describe the day, he summed it up in one word – laughter. Lots of it. Vicky and Chris celebrated their union with immense amounts of laughter – sounds perfect doesn’t it?

During my twenty-odd years of living in Brisbane, there was always one part of the Northern Rivers district that would make me feel homesick whenever I passed through it. That’s the stretch of road between Lennox Head and Ballina. This road passes Boulders Beach, Skennars Head and Flat Rock, and all of these locations hold some of the fondest memories of my childhood and teenage years. I remember in my later teens wishing I could own (or at least visit) some of the spectacular properties that line the hilltops along this road. Well on Saturday, I finally got to visit one. This was the location of Kaila and Danny’s ceremony and reception and it was as gorgeous as I had always imagined. Uninterupted views across to Boulders Beach on a day when the weather was perfect! You couldn’t pick a more stunning location and the entire day was simply magical. A beautiful couple surrounded by gorgeous friends at a spectacular venue… it all made my job a little too easy!

From the moment I arrived at the hilltop homestead at the back of Lennox Head, I knew I was in for a fun afternoon. This was Kaila & Danny’s engagement session and their property certainly had no shortage of picturesque spots to shoot in. The guys were so easy-going that it really didn’t feel like work… it was more like having a casual stroll with friends around an amazing piece of land. Some people are just more open to certain things than others and when I asked the guys if they minded laying in the grass, Kaila replied “The cow dung is dry… it’ll dust off easy”. From this point on I knew I was working with a couple that were willing to go the extra mile for the sake of a great image. I can’t wait for the wedding in September
If you are wondering what Danny is pointing at in one of the images below, they were spotting shapes in the clouds, almost oblivious to the fact that we were in the middle of a shoot. For me, it was like being a fly on the wall and witnessing what I imagine would be a slice of life when the cameras aren’t around. As a photographer, it was a really lovely moment.
