Brodie & Will. A Broken Head Wedding.

Brodie & Will. A Broken Head Wedding.

Brodie and Will ventured north to Byron Bay from the ACT for their big day. The boys made a road trip of the journey and spent a leisurely week working their way up the NSW coastline.

The couple relied on Byron Bay Weddings to handle most of the arrangements, and as always, they certainly delivered! The boys prepared for the big event onsite at Barefoot at Broken Head, while the ladies readied themselves at one of the neighboring bungalows.

There was not a cloud in site on this spring morning as Brodie and her bridesmaids made their way down to the dunes off Broken Head beach, to join the rest of the bridal party and a hundred or so family and friends, for an intimate ceremony officiated by Helen Riminac.

After the ceremony, everyone made their way back to Barefoot for plenty of great music, amazing food, heartfelt speeches, hacky-sack and general goodtimes.

As sunset approached, the boys from Byron Wedding Visual, the bridal party and I, all ventured up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse, to make the most of the late afternoon light and the setting sun. Once again, Byron Bay delivered with an incredible sunset… and a simply perfect way to cap off a beautiful day.

Bec & Jamie. A Ballina Wedding.

Bec & Jamie. A Ballina Wedding.

Bec and Jamie have such an amazing group of friends and I have been lucky enough to shoot several of their weddings. So many, that I’m starting to feel like part of the family. Each and every one has been a celebration of love and friendship and Bec and Jamie’s big day was certainly no exception.

The day took place at Dunes on Shelly Beach with uninterrupted views of the ocean as a backdrop under clear blue skies. The styling featured many items created by the bride and groom and a stunning macrame arbor, crafted by Vicki Veitch.

While Jamie paced back and forth across the aisle, the girls arrived in style in one of Coast 58’s gorgeous kombis, to the acoustic tunes of groomsman Simon Doe. Susie Figgis delivered a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony, and then after a short photoshoot on the nearby beaches, everyone celebrated with the couple, long into the evening.

Congratulations guys… I look forward to catching up with everyone at the next wedding 🙂

Brodie & Will. A Broken Head Engagement Session.

Brodie & Will. A Broken Head Engagement Session.

ENG-Brodie-Will-001

I love engagement sessions. They are generally a casual stroll with a fun couple in a really picturesque location. Brodie and Will’s session was no different except that we got to explore a beautiful location we didn’t know existed. As a kid I quite often went to Broken Head and would have explored the tracks throughout all the surrounding bushland, but it has been decades since I ventured very far up the Two Sisters Track, that leads south from Broken Head. During Brodie and Will’s shoot, we kept venturing further and kept discovering beautiful countryside. Couple this with gorgeous weather and an ocean full of playful dolphins, and we were guaranteed to have a wonderful afternoon.

These guys are to be married on the beach in September and I can’t wait to share their special day with them.

Renee & Liam. A Fig Tree Restaurant Wedding.

Renee & Liam. A Fig Tree Restaurant Wedding.

Renee & Liam’s gorgeous Byron Bay wedding featured some of the best the region has to offer. Liam and his family prepared themselves at a stunning property overlooking The Pass, while Renee’s preparations took place at Byron’s iconic Rae’s at Wategos. Uber talented David Dibley and Mia Conner looked after Renee’s hair and makeup before everyone made their way to the ever-popular Fig Tree Restaurant.

I’ve shot a lot of weddings at Fig Tree and I never tire of it. In fact, it seems to just keep getting better and better each time I’m there. One of the venue’s greatest assets is its staff. They work together like a well-oiled machine and no request ever seems to be a problem. It truly is a joy to work amongst such professionals. For Renee and Liam’s wedding, the venue was styled by The Wedding Shed and Byron Bay Weddings and featured beautiful floral creations from the Alstonville Florist.

The couple’s ceremony was officiated by the lovely Clarah Luxford. With crystal clear views of the Byron coastline as a backdrop to the ceremony, it’s hard to imagine a better place to start a life together… and I’m sure theirs is going to be a wonderful one. Congrats guys!

Sonya & Jamie. A Byron Bay Hinterland Wedding.

Sonya & Jamie. A Byron Bay Hinterland Wedding.

Long before their wedding date rolled around, I knew Sonya and Jamie’s wedding was going to be amazing. Not only are they a beautiful couple, but they choose some of my favourite wedding vendors to pull their day together. And when you know that everything is being left in the hands of talented people you have worked with before, you just know everything is going to go as planned… or perhaps even better than the couple had imagined.

All of the preparations and the ceremony took place at one of the hinterland’s hidden gems. The R&R Ranch is a Colorado resort style home with more than enough room to accommodate everything you need for a wedding. Catering at the ranch was taken care of by the wonderful staff from Harvest Cafe and everything was organised and managed to perfection by Rachael from The Events Lounge. The ceremony was officiated by the region’s grooviest celebrant, Mr Benjamin Carlyle, to the delightful tunes of Josh Boots from North Coast Entertainment.

After the ceremony, Jon and Seb from Byron Wedding Visual and I took to some of the gorgeous surrounding landscape to capture the couple’s images and video. Sonya and Jamie travelled in style upon the Magic Bus and then we were treated to more music, celebrations and incredible food at Harvest Cafe.

Krystal & Clayton. A Minden Country Wedding.

Krystal & Clayton. A Minden Country Wedding.

About twenty minutes west of Ipswich, Queensland, lies the small community of Minden, home to around one thousand residents, Krystal’s family farm and the Minden Retreat. Krystal and Clayton were joined by their closest friends and family for their ceremony and reception at this long established retreat. After the ceremony, the bridal party and I had a great time exploring some of the original barns and farm houses on the family property, some of which dated back to 1870.

Being a true-blue, country-boy, Clayton wasn’t exactly excited to be having his photo taken early in the day, but as the official duties of the day passed and the nerves dissipated, the couple relaxed into their newly formed bond and we had a great afternoon of shooting with a beautiful sunset. Congratulations guys… I hope you have an incredible life together!

Is there anything better than a sunset photo session on the beach when the sky is filled with moody post-storm clouds? Well, I guess there probably is, but right now, nothing comes to mind. Sonya & Jamie travelled to Byron Bay from Sydney for their hinterland wedding and a few days before the wedding, we took to the beach to capture these images. Each of my album packages includes an ‘engagement session’, which is essentially just a trial run of what we’ll be doing together on the wedding day. It’s a great chance for us all to get to know one another better and for me to understand what is and isn’t important to the couple (Oh… and it’s also a great opportunity to show the groom that having professional photos taken isn’t really scary at all). Keep an eye on the blog for Sonya & Jamie’s wedding… coming soon!

Courtney & Jacob. A Byron Bay Elopement.

Header-002

Some people like to make their wedding day a huge, lavish event with hundreds of friends and family along to share in their celebrations. Others, like Courtney and Jacob, choose a more simplistic path. Courtney and Jacob flew up from Victoria and were joined by their witnesses, their celebrant and myself for a very private ceremony on Little Wategos Beach, Byron Bay. Susie Figgis (www.lifeceremonies.com.au) delivered a beautiful service, complete with sand ceremony, in a manner that suited the couple perfectly. After the ceremony, some brief showers passed by, lasting just long enough to add a little variety to the images of the day, but not long enough to disturb anything else. Courtney, Jacob and I then had a great time exploring the landscape of Australia’s most easterly point… which would also be as close as we could get to Jacob’s hometown of Reno, Nevada without getting wet.

Last week, Rebecca, Jamie and I had organised to meet at Ballina’s Shelly Beach for their engagement shoot. When we arrived however, the beach was totally wild. The surf was thrashing around and dumping huge amounts of foam onto the beach. The sky was thick with salt and sand, and all-in-all it just didn’t seem like what any of us had in mind.

We decided instead to take a short drive to Boulder Beach and the comparison was incredible. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions at this well protected little cove. The new location also brought back some old memories. Four years ago I shot Rebecca’s good friend Kaila’s wedding nearby and we came to this very same location for the couple’s creative shoot.

These guys were such fun to shoot and I can’t wait for the big day in September!

What an incredible day I had yesterday. It started with a sunrise balloon flight across the Byron hinterland and ended on the beach with Renee and Liam, shooting their engagement session. These guys were so much fun during the shoot. Within a few minutes of firing off my first few frames, dark storm clouds rolled in and with them, plenty of rain. Instead of heading for cover however, Renee and Liam were happy to keep on with the shoot, and I am so glad they did!

The stormy weather had also created a rather unique look to the ocean. Belongil Creek was emptying into the sea and the dark teatree-stained water filled the first twenty metres or so of surf. By the end of the shoot we were all saturated, but laughing all the way back to the cars. Thanks so much for being such get sports guys… I can’t wait for your big day!
