Is there anything better than a sunset photo session on the beach when the sky is filled with moody post-storm clouds? Well, I guess there probably is, but right now, nothing comes to mind. Sonya & Jamie travelled to Byron Bay from Sydney for their hinterland wedding and a few days before the wedding, we took to the beach to capture these images. Each of my album packages includes an ‘engagement session’, which is essentially just a trial run of what we’ll be doing together on the wedding day. It’s a great chance for us all to get to know one another better and for me to understand what is and isn’t important to the couple (Oh… and it’s also a great opportunity to show the groom that having professional photos taken isn’t really scary at all). Keep an eye on the blog for Sonya & Jamie’s wedding… coming soon!

Last week, Rebecca, Jamie and I had organised to meet at Ballina’s Shelly Beach for their engagement shoot. When we arrived however, the beach was totally wild. The surf was thrashing around and dumping huge amounts of foam onto the beach. The sky was thick with salt and sand, and all-in-all it just didn’t seem like what any of us had in mind.
We decided instead to take a short drive to Boulder Beach and the comparison was incredible. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions at this well protected little cove. The new location also brought back some old memories. Four years ago I shot Rebecca’s good friend Kaila’s wedding nearby and we came to this very same location for the couple’s creative shoot.
These guys were such fun to shoot and I can’t wait for the big day in September!

What an incredible day I had yesterday. It started with a sunrise balloon flight across the Byron hinterland and ended on the beach with Renee and Liam, shooting their engagement session. These guys were so much fun during the shoot. Within a few minutes of firing off my first few frames, dark storm clouds rolled in and with them, plenty of rain. Instead of heading for cover however, Renee and Liam were happy to keep on with the shoot, and I am so glad they did!
The stormy weather had also created a rather unique look to the ocean. Belongil Creek was emptying into the sea and the dark teatree-stained water filled the first twenty metres or so of surf. By the end of the shoot we were all saturated, but laughing all the way back to the cars. Thanks so much for being such get sports guys… I can’t wait for your big day!

Krystal & Clayton took a leisurely drive down to Bangalow last weekend for their engagement session. They travelled down from Minden where they will host their country wedding in April, and as such, they wanted to have a bit of a country feel to their images. Several times a week for the past five years I have driven past a local property with a great old wooden gate that I have always wanted to shoot at. For this session, I finally took the time to go and chat with the owner and get his tick of approval. This really is a photographer’s paradise around Bangalow. We can be shooting in a very country setting like this one moment and be kicking up the sand on some of the country’s best beaches just ten minutes later. As the crow flies, this particular old gate is probably less than 300m from my house… it doesn’t get much more local than that.

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of spending the morning with this amazing couple. It was a very early start to make it down to Angourie by sunrise… but boy it was worth it. Tanya, Peter and I shared the beach and this gorgeous morning with only a few others, which seemed very surprising considering just how spectacular a morning it was.
Next month Tanya and Peter will be getting married at the Angourie Rainforest Resort. Keep an eye on the blog for images of their special day.

Stephanie and Dylan live in Melbourne and decided to be married in gorgeous Byron Bay (more on that in their wedding post… coming soon!). As they were from out of town, the only chance we had to shoot their engagement session was just a couple of days before the wedding. ‘Engagement Session’ may even be the wrong term for these shoots. They are more like a ‘trial run’ where the couple and I get to know one another a little better and I get to understand what is important to them photographically. They also have the opportunity to experience what it’s like in front of my camera and realise that it’s not really all that scary… more like a casual walk in the park… or in this case, a nice stroll on the beach.
For Steph and Dyl’s engagement session, we ventured down to one of my favourite parts of Belongil Beach. A nice, quiet part of Byron Bay where you can just about believe you are the only ones on the planet. These guys have so much fun together and Steph has the most infectious smile I have ever come across. Stay tuned for highlights from their Fig Tree wedding hitting the blog very soon.
